Math, Data & Computing

During the ‘Introduction to modeling’ course in my first year I learned how to make a mathematical model to optimize something. I learned how every function relates and depends on each other. This course enhanced my mathematical skills.

In my second year I followed the course ‘Making Sense of Sensors’, this focusses on acquiring data from the human body, while making use of sensors. In the course the ethical part of data acquisition is also highly important. This all according to the TU/e Code of Conduct.

Me and my team gathered data with Mi bands. The data sets we gathered from the Mi Bands and from the KNMI weather stations had different formats. I learned how to combine these and present them together in graphs using excel. Even though we didn’t find any significant correlation in the data, we still learned a lot from analyzing it. We used different kind of graphs to find differences and correlations.

In this course I also learned a lot about the ethical part. I’ve never really worked so intensely with the TU/e code of conduct as in this course and it really opened my eyes to why we use it. Since in this course we were working with real-life test persons, we had to take their privacy and safety into account. Our test could not do any harm to our participants and they should always be able to stop whenever they liked. Also we couldn’t present their data on an individual level in order to protect their privacy.

The course ‘Intelligent Interactive Products’, that I took in my B3.1 semester, focused on the implementation of machine learning algorithms in products. In this course we did not have to build these algorithms from scratch, but learn how to use them in order to design a working product. I learned how these algorithms work and when to use them. I also learned how to store data sheets and training the model with those.

In the area of math data and computing I would say I’m the least experienced. I do not have a talent for mathematics, so this area of expertise was challenging for me to develop in. I think I got acquainted with the basics. In the future I would like to follow a course in statistics, that’s the only thing I miss within my bachelor.
