Growth

During the 4 years that I have spent at the faculty of industrial design I have grown substantially both personal and professional, especially this last year. In the beginning of this year I got really inspired by the psychology course, It was interesting to read about the human psyche and why things sometimes go the way they go. Furthermore, this last semester I got very inspired by my final bachelor project. I could finally form my latest vision and had a clearer outlook on what I want with design and technology.

In my 2nd and 3rd year at this study it was not clear where I was headed due to personal circumstances. I just continued on the automatic pilot for a while. Then when things got better in the 4th year, my eyes finally opened up for the possibilities for the future. I realized what the courses from the B2 had brought me. What I found interesting and how I could use these skills in my last year.

In my second year I did my Project 2 Design in the squad Smart Mobility. I very much liked this project. I discovered that I really liked to work together with a commercial client. In my Project 3 Research , I was in the squad Studio Silver. I did not enjoy this particular project. We designed for people with dementia. In this project we worked together with a health organization, this did not fit me as a designer. I felt that within this health organization, designers were too limited by the thoughts and feelings of the client, rather that the thoughts and feelings of the actual users. I noticed that in design, I want to really work for the users, and make a difference in their life. This realization contributed to my current vision.

I followed free electives in my B3.1, because I felt like I needed to explore more and get more skills. Therefore, I chose different courses from different faculties. One of the courses that had a big impact on my vision was ‘Introduction to Psychology in Technology. This course thought me the theory behind psychology of potential users. I found it extremely interesting how complex the human brain is, and how many factors contribute to the behaviour of humans. This made me really interested in the individual.

When I look at my vision from the 1st year I see that I changed a lot over the years. In my first vision I was very focused on the environment due to my experiences in Africa. After the year that followed I also discovered that there are many problems closer to home. In my opinion sometimes these, seemingly first world problems, need to be addressed first before we can focus on the bigger picture.

During my last project I learned how to be responsible for a design project on my own. I also learned to ask for help from experts if needed. For me I needed to get over a personal threshold to do so. I saw that asking for help inside a design squad was very helpful. This year I also had more contacts within the squad than previous years, making it a fruitful working environment. I also offered my help to others when they needed it. I discovered, I can perform well when working in a positive environment, which was the vitality squad. From negativity I can get extremely stressed, which has a negative influence on my work. In the future I know what I am looking for in a working environment for during and after my master.

I had envisioned to specialize in user & society and technology & realization in my master, because these areas greatly interest me. Throughout my bachelor I have focused on these areas extensively. As described I can communicate well with other disciplines when it comes to technology and about what I want and need for a design. However, programming software is not something I excel in, even though I have practiced a lot throughout my bachelor. Therefore, it might be better to specialize in User & society and creativity & aesthetics, in order to bring my talents to better use.
